Why a History Now
On the 28th February it was 100 years after the Labour Party adopted its present name. This is a less important anniversary than the formation of the Labour Representation Committee exactly six years before, but it prompted us to ask ourselves what we know about the history of the Labour Party in Grimsby.Enquiries found that others had considered writing one, but a lack of records had put them off. So we thought we could at least collect together what information there is, if only for the benefit of some future historian.
Some Surprises
Our Secretary obtained from national archives the copies of correspondence from Grimsby to Ramsey MacDonald in London in the early years of the last century. We also found that in copies of the local press of the time, and in records in the Grimsby library, there are very full reports about public meetings, elections, and the people involved.
Finally, a number of members have kindly lent us photographs, and much other information, some of which we hope in time to put together for a little exhibition.
More records wanted
There are still lots of gaps. We should be very pleased to hear from anyone with anything that might possibly be of interest. Please ring Jane Hyldon-King on 233627 or Jeremy Barker on 313843 or click any bits of labour history in Grimsby.
